According to 2010-2012 U.S. Census, more than 128,000 Charlotte residents are foreign born. Among those, more than 10,000 are African immigrant families living in Charlotte-- with that number steadily growing. Many parents of immigrant children are not fluent in English. Children of immigrant families are forced to navigate the difference in cultural world views, and language each day as they attend school. This existence between two cultural and linguistic worlds often creates a gap of understanding that may often cause difficulty in academic success. Because many parents do not speak English fluently, they are often unable to assist children with school work, or even communicate with school officials and teachers to offer basic academic support to their school aged children. The reality is that, many school aged children of immigrants face the daunting reality of cultural differences between home and school that leave them confused and lost, and often unable to successfully integrate and excel academically in school.
